Metgen selected as the ‘grand prix’ winner of the Innovation Radar Prize 2021

This year for the seventh time, the European Commission has awarded prizes to Europe’s most promising innovations emerging from EU-funded research and innovation projects.

MetGen is selected as the ‘Grand Prix’ winner of 2021 Innovation Radar Prize among 200 applicants, for our innovative sustainable bio-based additive METNIN SHIELD solution to create a better alternative to cardboard.

The European Commission awarded prizes to Europe’s most promising innovations that have emerged from EU-funded research and innovation projects.

MetGen from Finland was awarded the overall 2021 Innovation Radar Prize for their game-changing bio-based solution to replace petrochemical wax-based solutions currently used in cardboard packaging boxes.  MetGen’s patented technology also ensures cardboard packaging is easier to recycle and less of it ends up in landfill.

In the annual event of the Innovation Radar, held on 21 October, 12 finalists from all across Europe pitched to a jury composed of investors and entrepreneurs their plans for getting to market with their ground-breaking innovations that have been supported by the EU.

About the Innovation Radar Prize

The Innovation Radar is the European Commission’s initiative to make it easier to discover innovations emerging from research and innovation projects financed by the EU under Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe, the world’s largest public funded research programmes. Putting a spotlight on excellence, its goal is to allow citizens, public officials, investors and corporates to discover the outputs of EU innovation funding. It offers the opportunity to seek out innovators who could follow in the footsteps of companies such as BioNTech, Skype, TomTom and ARM Holdings, all of whom received EU funding in their early days.

This year’s prize scheme was open to over 2000 EU-funded innovators across Europe – SMEs and Universities/Research Institutes – developing a wide range of ground-breaking innovations. It focused on innovators in 3 categories: ‘Innovation in Sustainability Tech‘, ‘Innovation in Health Tech‘ and ‘Innovation in Disruptive Science‘. These SMEs, university teams, spinoffs and start-ups reflect the diversity of EU-funded research and innovation and come from every corner of Europe.

The Innovation Radar platform can be accessed on the web or via the Apple app store and the Google app store.
