Biomass is not oil – its the soup of the day. Our philosophy is to design enzymes to have maximal impact in the real-life process conditions. This is why we create each SUNO™ solution through extensive application testing using our customers unique substrate, carefully selecting the right enzymes for the task. At the same time we are able to extend the typical boundaries for hydrolysis: our thermotolerant and inhibitor resistant enzymes allow for hydrolysis in 60 °C and high consistency. Thanks to our technology platform, we are fast in achieving results despite our superior service.
It is noteworthy, that lowering the enzyme dosage through tailored and more specific enzyme solutions also enables addressing another key-challenge in biorefining: extremely high volumes of the processed biomass due to low consistency (dry-matter content). Capital investment required for an industrial biorefinery can create over 50% of the end-product cost. Substrate and process specific enzymatic solutions allow utilization of significantly higher dry-matter content of the biomass in the process. Increasing the biomass consistency from 15% to 30% halves the volume of the processed biomass and significantly reduces the required capital investment.
In biorefinery applications, MetZyme® SUNO™ breaks the recalcitrance, catalyzes lignin reactions, and together with cellulase and hemicellulase complexes SUNO™ enables more thorough hydrolysis. Oxidoreductases also eliminate a wide range of known inhibitors that may slow down your process or end up in side streams.
This combinatory action between oxidoreductases and hydrolases results in increased yield of reducing sugars as well as potentially accelerated conversion or fermentation rates.
MetZyme® SUNO™ solution’s extraordinary performance in a wide range of operating conditions – even the most challenging ones – enable effective lignin processing and sugar conversion. Ultimately, allowing for affordable production of cellulosic sugars and value added chemicals.

Note: In specific conditions MetZyme® SUNO™ oxidation process may lead to catalytic fragmentation of lignin to low molecular weight aromatic compounds, which can open opportunities for new value added-product streams in biorefineries. These new streams can be further utilized – e.g. polymerized or depolymerized – by further enzymatic conversion.
